FASHION PHOTOGRAPHY (SPAIN)

Another day of FashionArt (day two) that Fashion Heroines loved a lot! The beginning of the evening was spectacular with a beautiful Summer sunset over the Bay of Cascais. In the Square near the Bay very stylish people come together to attend the opening of one of the most interesting exhibitions of the Festival: Fashion Photography by the recognized Spanish photographers: José Manuel Ferrater, Eugenio Recuenco, Daniel Riera and David Urbano - you can read more about them HERE.

This festival show us such diversity which clearly demonstrate that fashion is not just clothes and accessories, but it traverses different forms of art ranging from photography, installation, film, documentary, music, design and of course the catwalk. It will be presented collections of Spanish and Portuguese designers which fashion shows will happen until Sunday.


Mais um dia do Estoril FashionArt Festival que está a decorrer em Cascais desde a passada Quarta-feira - DAY TWO. Fashion Heroines adorou este 2º dia da 1ª edição de um Festival que promete vir a ser um marco não só para os fashionistas como para todos aqueles que se interessam por moda e pelas expressões artisticas que lhe estão associadas. Este festival vem, assim, demostrar claramente que moda não é só roupa e acessórios, mas, que movimenta diferentes formas de arte que vai desde a fotografia, à instalação, cinema, documentário, música, design e claro as colecções de estilistas espanhóis e portugueses.

Estava um fim de tarde magnifico na Baia de Cascais onde se juntou muita gente estilosa para assistir à inauguração de uma das mais interessantes exposições do Festival: fotografia de moda dos reconhecidos fotógrafos espanhóis José Manuel Ferrater, Eugenio Recuenco, Daniel Riera e David Urbano. Selected by the artistic contribution that they give to the fashion and photography in Spain, the images presented in the Exhibition of Fashion Photography (ES) are also evidence of the diversity of languages allowed by photographic expression.

The exhibition remains open from July 2 to July 11 from 13:00 to 21:00.

Then Fashion Heroines went to Marina of Cascais where we saw the opening of an interesting exhibition that promises to revolutionize menswear: " Hombresenfalda" (skirts for men). There are 110 skirts male mannequins with rebel proposals of national fashion designers - Ana Salazar, Dino Alves, Filipe Faísca, Nuno Baltazar, Ricardo Dourado and Miguel Vieira - and international designers, mainly Spanish.

Seguidamente fomos até à Marina de Cascais onde assistimos à inauguração de uma curiosa exposição que promete revolucionar a moda masculina: Hombresenfalda ( saias para homens). São 110 manequins de saias masculinas que simbolizam as propostas rebeldes de criadores de moda nacionais - Ana Salazar, Dino Alves, Filipe Faísca, Nuno Baltazar, Ricardo Dourado e Miguel Vieira - e internacionais, sobretudo espanhóis.

We do not know if the men skirts will become a trend, but the proposals presented in the exhibition are very interesting, although some little wearable. And certainly some pieces are really revolutionary and they would probably say elegant. But only for the most daring men!

Não sabemos se a as saias de homem virão a ser uma tendência mas as propostas apresentadas na exposição são muito interessantes, ainda que algumas muito pouco vestiveis. E certamente que algumas peças são revolucionárias e diriamos até elegantes. Mas, só para os homens mais atrevidos!

LAB 'WORK-IN-PROGRESS/PERFORMANCE

Aforest-design, Torres Lara, Ricardo Andrez, Vitor and White Tent, five projects in fashion design together united by a common stance against the design of clothing, they are the five labels that make up the platform LAB of ModaLisboa, who brought an original performance to the Estoril FashionArt Festival's catwalk - "Work-in-Progress".

It is therefore proposed to the viewer to experience the creative process through the creative intervention of Marilia Maria Mira (fashion designer) in five selected pieces. Thus, the audience watches in the catwalk the deconstruction of the individual pieces, and the creation of a new object.

É, assim, proposto ao espectador experienciar o processo criativo através da intervenção de Marilia Maria Mira (designer de moda) em cinco peças seleccionadas da plataforma LAB. Assim, o público assiste à desconstrução na passerelle, de cada uma das peças, presenciando a criação de um novo objecto.

Cute Brit Andrew Garfield is the new Spider Man

If you missed last year's 'The Imaginarium of Doctor Parnassus', a.k.a. Heath Ledger's last movie, you missed one of the most enchanting performances ever by rising British star Andrew Garfield. He played the elfish Anton, one of the Doctor's performers, who helped rescue Ledger's character from certain death while hanging from a bridge and brought him into a ragtag group of traveling gypsies. One look at Garfield and I was in love.

The magic was real - customers were literally taken through the imagination of Dr. Parnassus by stepping through a makeshift mirror into their own imaginations, into real-life dreams that would make Walt Disney himself cry tears of joy. Anton's job (and later Ledger's) was to reel customers in, to seduce them with stories about the 1000-year-old Dr..Parnassus, of making their dreams come true.

Garfield played Anton with a sincere honesty and unyielding sense of duty, until he discovers the truth of it all. Which might describe his transition from relatively unknown British actor to all-American Blockbuster hero. But let's hope for the best.



Fitting into Tobey McGuire's tights would prove a bit of a task for any actor, much less an unknown from the UK. But Garfield has that "IT" factor, that indescribable something special that big stars possess. Director Marc Webb said of Garfield, "He has a rare combination of intelligence, wit, and humanity. Mark my words, you will love Andrew Garfield as Peter Parker."

Plus, he's great eye candy. In tights. And close-ups.

The fourth film in the series is planned to be a Spider-Man origin story ("prequel") that Sony said would focus on "a teenager grappling with both contemporary human problems and amazing super-human crises." Garfield is 26, but easily passes for 16.

The actor is one of the hottest talents in Hollywood. He's currently promoting two movies - 'Never Let Me Go' with Keira Knightley, and 'The Social Network', a making-of-Facebook tell-all costarring Justin Timberlake and Jesse Eisenburg. And he's currently working on a movie called "Night Flower".

ESTORIL FASHIONART FESTIVAL - DAY ONE

It started yesterday and will run until next Sunday the 1st edition of the Estoril FashionArt Festival in Cascais(near Lisbon). The Festival began in the best way with the opening of the exhibition Paco Rabanne - Rebel Designer. The exhibition will be open to the public until July 11 at the Museum Conde Castro Guimarães, Cascais (near the Marina). So go see the most iconic pieces of the Spanish designer such as their fantastic dresses on metal.

Começou ontem e vai decorrer até Domingo a 1ª edição do Estoril FashionArt Festival em Cascais. O Festival começou da melhor maneira com a inauguração da exposição Paco Rabanne - Designer and Rebel, aberta ao público até 11 de Julho no Museu Conde Castro Guimarães, em Cascais (junto à Marina). Vai assim poder ver as peças mais icónicas daquele designer espanhol como sejam os seus fantásticos vestidos em metal.

After the opening of the exhibition the night ended on a high note with a magnificent concert by the Portuguese musician Rodrigo Leão & Cinema Ensemble and a special guest, the Catalan singer Maria Berasarte with a very poetical and dramatic performance.

The unexpected guest was a very beautiful Peacock from the roof in the courtyard of the Museo Conde Castro Guimarães decided to sing to the battles with the musicians... Fantastic!

Depois da inauguração da exposição, a noite fechou com chave de ouro com o magnifico concerto de Rodrigo Leão & Cinema Emsemble, com a convidada especial, a cantora catalã Maria Berasarte e a sua poética e dramática performance.

Um inesperado convidado foi o lindissimo pavão que de um telhado no páteo do Museu onde reside decidiu cantar ao despique com os músicos... fantástico!

CARLOS GIL: GLAMOUR AND ELEGANCE FOR STRONG WOMEN!

Charming Carlos Gil, the Portuguese designer spoke to Fashion Heroines in “Litoral Fashion” held the last weekend in Aveiro, a beautiful city crossed by the estuary of the same name. Carlos Gil unveiled us his inspirations behind the design of his latest collection Fall / Winter 2010-11 and the fashion show which he brought to Aveiro. He spoked us about the Portuguese fashion, the desired union among all those who are able to help the Portuguese fashion sign up on the international circuit, his creative style and the strong and independent women who Carlos Gil likes wearing, which includes the Portuguese First Lady Maria Cavaco Silva.

Tell us about your latest collection Fall / Winter 2010-2011? What were their sources of inspiration for the collection, and for the fashion show?

This collection as the concept for the runway were inspired by the fusion between East and Africa that you can see in the choice of the materials, colors, the details such as the use of feathers in the hair, even in the music itself. It’s a Winter collection with a mix of different kind of materials such as silk blend with wool and fur, a perfect combination of materials or what I want it will be perfect. It is a collection that conveys a lot of peace, tranquility but at the same time it is a collection that takes us to distant and unforgettable places. I think it is a collection that people will like because of the rich colors, the cut, and all the emotion it conveys. It was not easy to mix two cultures so wrinkled as the African and Eastern and make this a balance fusion, namely the East pageantry and the peace of mind and tranquility of Africa.

I think that all collections have to take their flair but I really dislike the “too much” glow… in a certain way it bothers me . Clearly runways must have a shinny and glow side to make the collections scored. But even in catwalk I like everything to be really smooth with great attention to details. Some discretion in luxury it’s what defines me, the air must be at the same time chic and austere.

What kind of woman is that Carlos Gil likes to wear?

I like to dress the strong worker women with a very stark personality, and very assertive. It is obvious that image today is perhaps the most important thing but we cannot take it to the extreme, we must always combine the image with the personality, not disfiguring what the person really is but helping to highlight the feminine strengths to convey sophistication.

When you are creating a collection what is the most important for you: fashion or style?


Style, no doubt! Fashion is something very fleeting. The style of a person is a very strong thing and very own. Style is something that a person has or has not. It isn’t the designer who joins style and class to someone, there’s no such thing as to give style. On contrary it’s the personality that adds style to what someone wears. It is not the dress that makes the woman is the woman who makes the dress. I so agree with this sentence! I like to dress stylish women like Priscilla Presley, Vicky Fernandes and Yolanda to give some examples. These are women that add charm and class to any piece they wear.

How do you measure the temperature of Portuguese fashion? Is it cold, warm or hot?

It's very hard to tell because today we are limited in many ways, but I think that fashion in Portugal is in a very good mood, at least we have good prospects, but there is still a long way towards being a center of fashion. But I think we all have a good shoe, and a good foot into that shoe for walking all the way…


Despite the great Portuguese tradition in textiles and shoes industry with quality long been recognized, what is missing to our designers get well-known aboard?

I think that before we leave for the foreign markets we have to conquer the Portuguese market. Sometimes what's missing in Portugal is the union. If each pull just for himself we cannot get anything, the union instead generates a large force and leads to great things. I think when this is done, first in the Portuguese market and then externally it is all much easier.

When you refer to the union you are talking about the designers?

I'm talking about the designers, producers… and everyone who are involved in fashion. People sometimes think that fashion is only the designers but it is not. There is a great team that is behind the designer: the make-up artists, hairdressers, a good DJ, who works the runway, one that ensures the financial part, producers, event organizers… all that staff will be very united on the same goals in order to make a big fashion show and are this glowness that I like and for which I live.

How do you see that Portuguese fashion magazines (or Portuguese editions of international magazines) use few pieces of Portuguese designers in their fashion editorials?

I think people like the unachievable. They think they have much more value to show a piece which is only accessible to a few. Wearing a piece of Carlos Gil is much easier than a piece of Chanel or YSL. In my opinion the failure of Portuguese editorials, in what this matter is concern, is once again the lack of the union that I already spoke above. But this whole situation is very behind and everything depends of the magazines’ guidelines. People are open to support Portuguese designers or not. Fortunately, today there are people with a certain status who are keen to wear Portuguese brands. This is the case of our First Lady Maria Cavaco Silva, who prefers to wear pieces from a Portuguese designer. She is a good example in the use of principles which promoted Portuguese fashion that everyone should follow.


Carlos Gil became responsible for the wardrobe of the First Lady. How did it happen?

In my life everything happened very spontaneous! I'm the designer of the Portuguese singer Katia Guerreiro and one day Katia weared a Carlos Gil's suit that the First Lady Maria Cavaco Silva liked a lot and she asked who was the designer of Katia. So I popped on the scene.

It is a challenge to wear the First Lady of Portugal?

Everything in my life is a challenge, life is a constant challenge… Today to be here and talking to you is a challenge, why? Because it could go wrong. Dressing the First Lady is a challenge that brings additional difficulties for the position she plays, I have to be very insightful ... As for style is concern I can’t change the style of a person but I must respect each personality, and it is important for the designer to make bloom the personal style of his clients. So dressing the First Lady it has been a very interesting work and a challenge over the past five years and it requires much effort but I managed to achieve the goals I had set.

If you had to sum up your work as designer in a few words what would they be?

The main thing is comfort. I have to assure that all the pieces are comfortable either by touching the fabrics, the silhouette… if the piece is wearable. Then the elegance because there isn't comfort without elegance and vice versa. If the person does not feel well she or he cannot be stylish. Then there is the glamour but with discretion and sophistication, all seasoned with lots of chic simplicity.

CARLOS GIL: GLAMOUR AND ELEGANCE FOR STRONG WOMEN (Portuguese Version)

Carlos Gil, estilista português, falou com o Fashion Heroines no âmbito do Litoral Fashion - 2ª edição Pé D'Água - que decorreu no fim de semana passado em Aveiro, uma lindissima cidade atravessada pela ria do mesmo nome. Carlos Gil desvendou-nos as suas inspirações por detrás da concepção da sua última colecção Outono/Inverno 2010-11 e do próprio desfile que trouxe a Aveiro, mediu a temperatura à moda portuguesa, e falou-nos, ainda, da importância da união entre todos os agentes envolvidos no processo criativo para que a moda portuguesa se inscreva nos circuitos internacionais, e das mulheres fortes e independentes que gosta de vestir, onde se inclui a Primeira-dama portuguesa, Maria Cavaco Silva.

Fale-nos da sua última colecção Outono/Inverno 2010-2011? Quais foram as suas fontes de inspiração para a colecção e para o desfile?

Tanto esta colecção como a própria concepção do desfile foram inspirados na fusão entre o Oriente e África, fusão essa que se vai poder ver nos materiais utilizados, nas cores, nos detalhes como o uso das penas nos penteados, a até na própria música. Vai ser uma colecção de Inverno onde as sedas se misturam com as lãs e as peles havendo sempre uma conjugação de materiais muito perfeita ou aquilo que eu gostaria que fosse perfeita. É uma colecção que transmite muita paz, muita tranquilidade mas ao mesmo tempo é uma colecção que nos leva a sítios longínquos inesquecíveis. Penso que é uma colecção que as pessoas vão gostar pelas cores, pelo corte, e pela emoção que toda ela nos transmite. Não foi fácil misturar duas culturas tão vincadas como a africana e a oriental e tornar essa fusão harmoniosa, designadamente, a ostentação do Oriente e a paz de espírito e tranquilidade de África.

Eu penso que todas as colecções têm que ter o seu lado ostentoso mas o exagero a mim incomoda-me de certa forma. É claro que nos desfiles há que haver um lado de espectáculo e brilho para tornar as colecções vincadas. Mas até mesmo na própria passerelle gosto que tudo seja muito harmonioso sempre com muita atenção aos pormenores. Uma certa discrição mesmo no luxo é aquilo que me define, o ar chique e ao mesmo tempo austero.

Que tipo de mulher é que o Carlos Gil gosta de vestir?

Gosto de vestir a mulher que trabalha com uma personalidade muito vincada, forte e que sinta em si vontade e necessidade de se afirmar. É óbvio que a imagem hoje em dia é talvez das coisas mais importantes mas não podemos levar isso ao extremo, devemos sempre conjugar a imagem com a personalidade, nunca desfigurando aquilo que a pessoa é mas ajudando-a a sublinhar os pontos fortes a transmitir sofisticação.

Quando está a criar uma colecção o que é que para si é mais importante a moda ou o estilo?


Estilo, sem sombra de dúvida. Até porque a moda é algo muito passageiro. O estilo de uma pessoa é algo muito forte e muito próprio e que se tem ou não se tem. Não é um estilista que cria estilo e classe a uma pessoa, é a imagem de uma pessoa que acrescenta estilo àquilo que veste. É a mulher que pode enaltecer o vestido não é o vestido que vai dizer que aquela mulher está deslumbrante. São essas mulheres que eu gosto de vestir. Como uma Priscilla Presley ou uma Vicky Fernandes e Yolanda. São mulheres que acrescentam carisma e classe a qualquer peça que usem.

Como é que mede a temperatura da moda portuguesa?


É difícil falar porque hoje em dia nós estamos limitados em muitos pontos, mas, penso que a moda em Portugal está no bom caminho pelo menos temos boas perspectivas, mas, ainda há um longo caminho a percorrer para sermos um centro de moda. Mas acho que todos nós temos um bom sapato e um bom pé que entre nesse sapato para caminhar.


Apesar da grande tradição portuguesa nos têxteis e sapatos com qualidade há muito reconhecida, o que é que falta para que os nossos criadores se imponham no mercado externo?

Eu penso que antes de se partir para o mercado externo temos que conquistar o mercado interno. Por vezes o que falta em Portugal é a união. Se cada um puxar só para si não se consegue nada, a união pelo contrário gera uma grande força e leva a grandes feitos. Penso que quando isso for feito, primeiro internamente e depois externamente será tudo muito mais fácil.


Quando se refere a união está a falar dos criadores?

Estou a falar dos criadores, de produtores, de tudo aquilo que envolve a moda. As pessoas às vezes julgam que a moda é o estilista mas não é. Há uma grande equipa que está por detrás do estilista: o maquilhador, o cabeleireiro, um bom Dj, quem trabalhe a passerelle, alguém que assegure a parte financeira, os produtores, os organizadores dos eventos, todos têm que estar muito unidos nos mesmos objectivos para que se possa fazer um grande espectáculo e é desses grandes espectáculos que eu gosto e para os quais eu vivo.


Como é que vê o facto de as revistas de moda portuguesas ou as edições portuguesas de revistas internacionais usarem tão pouco peças de criadores portugueses nos seus editoriais de moda?

Eu acho que as pessoas gostam do inatingível e acham que tem muito mais valor mostrar uma peça que só está ao alcance de uns quantos eleitos. Mostrar uma peça de Carlos Gil é muito mais fácil do que uma peça da Chanel ou do YSL. Quanto à falta de editoriais de moda portugueses está mais uma vez patente a tal falta de união que falei anteriormente. Mas, toda essa situação vem muito detrás e tudo depende das directrizes da direcção das próprias revistas, ou se apanham as pessoas abertas para esse rumo ou não. Felizmente que hoje já se encontram pessoas com um determinado estatuto que fazem questão de vestir marcas portuguesas. É o caso da nossa Primeira-dama, Maria Cavaco Silva, que prefere vestir peças de um criador português. Ela é o exemplo de princípios de promoção da moda nacional que todos deveriam seguir.

Como é que aconteceu o Carlos Gil vir a ser o responsável pelo guarda-roupa da Primeira-Dama?

Tudo aconteceu de forma muito natural como tudo na minha vida. Eu visto a Kátia Guerreiro e naquele dia vesti-lhe um fato que a Dra. Maria (Cavaco Silva) gostou e perguntou quem é que era o estilista da Kátia. E assim eu apareci em cena.


É um grande desafio vestir a Primeira-dama de Portugal?

Tudo na minha vida é um desafio, a vida é um desafio constante, hoje estar a falar aqui consigo é um desafio, porquê? Porque poderia correr mal. O ter vindo hoje aqui a Aveiro está a ser outro desafio. Vestir a Primeira-dama é um desafio que trás dificuldades acrescidas pelo cargo que ela desempenha, tenho que ser muito perspicaz... Quanto ao estilo não se deve modificar o estilo de uma pessoa mas respeitar-se a sua personalidade e cabe ao estilista fazer desabrochar o estilo pessoal. Tem sido um trabalho e um desafio ao longo destes cinco anos muito interessante e que exige muito esforço mas tenho conseguido alcançar os objectivos que tinha traçado.

Se tivesse que resumir as suas colecções em poucas palavras quais seriam?

A principal é o conforto. Não há nenhuma colecção que eu faça que não tenha que me assegurar se as peças são confortáveis quer pelo toque dos tecidos, pela silhueta, se a peça é vestível… De seguida a elegância porque não pode haver conforto sem elegância e vice-versa. Se a pessoa não se sente bem não pode estar elegante. Depois é o glamour mas com discrição e muita sofisticação, tudo temperado com muita simplicidade chique.
