Long, long ago (in a galaxy around the corner)...
We, Susan & Jon (awkwardly pictured below) went on a trip to Duluth this past June:
While there, we saw beautiful scenery (Canal Park lighthouse):

...and on the way home, Susan played "self-portraits" with their camera, a game which Jon does not love very much:

In July, Jon played a beautiful Nina Simone song at his in-law's 50th Wedding Anniversary Party:
Susan inherited her Grandmother Miranda Henrietta Rose Denbrooke Heath's skill for horticulturing african violets (the trick is to not get the leaves wet, ever):
Susan made her ward's YW girl's camp flag:
...and did NOT act like a camp leader - she's the 2nd one in from the left:
(note: Susan got asked daily at camp if she was a leader or a camper).
A Monarch visited the Ramsey house of royalty:
Bonnie Wright stole Susan's face:
(screen still from a new film to be released soon).
Our neighbour gave us our pumpkin that was growing on their side of the fence; it is turning a nice bright orange on the kitchen table now:
and Susan colored her hair red:

Susan's art will be published next month in Melvin Lans' online art magazine (Jon's artist friend from Colombia, South America)
Jon has been patiently teaching Susan quantum mechanics (while enduring her lack of basic math skills)
Jon started helping coach his niece Breanna's soccer team
and Susan started leaving fewer carbon footprints on the planet by taking the bus to work, which she likes because it feels like school.

MY STRONG SOUL
When Fashion Heroines did an interview to the Portuguese fashion designer Carlos Gil ( which you can read HERE), the photographer Joao Lamares who made the photoshoot for the interview and photographed the designer's fashion show, felt in love with the elegance and style of Carlos Gil's designs. So the idea of making a fashion editorial with Carlos Gil's latest work became more and more imperious in the photographer's head and heart.
Quando o Fashion Heroines fez a entrevista ao criador português Carlos Gil ( A qual pode ler AQUI), o fotógrafo João Lamares que fotografou o entrevistado assim como o desfile que se seguiu em Aveiro, apaixonou-se pelo estilo elegante das criações do estilista. Então a ideia de fazer um editorial de moda com o último trabalho de Carlos Gil cresceu cada vez mais na cabeça e no coração do fotógrafo.
Today Fashion Heroines is pround to present at first-hand the latest work of Carlos Gil captured by the lens of Joao Lamares. But photography is something dual and it has always two-way; Photography captures also the truth about the photographer. How did this fashion editorial's idea come to light? /Como surgiu a ideia de fazer este editorial?
It came up in a coffee talk, due to the work that the Fashion Heroines developed with Carlos Gil which gave rise to a desire to do something more engaging.
Surgiu numa conversa de café, decorrente do trabalho que o Fashion Heroines desenvolveu com o Carlos Gil e que deu origem a uma vontade de fazermos algo mais envolvente.
What are the main sources of inspiration behind the concept of this photoshoot?/ O que é que o inspirou na sua concepção?
The very idea that Carlos Gil sets for the woman he likes to wear. The elegance combined with the tenacity and the ability to change things.
A própria ideia que o Carlos Gil define para a mulher que gosta de vestir. A elegância aliada à tenacidade, à capacidade de mudar as coisas.
What’s inspiring you more as photographer in the Carlos Gil's work?/Há algo em particular que o inspire como fotógrafo no trabalho de Carlos Gil?
Yes, with no doubt, the elegance of the elements of the collections.
Sim, sem dúvida, a elegância dos elementos que constituem as colecções.
What can you tell us more about those photos?/ O que é que nos pode dizer mais acerca destas fotos?
I cannot say much. Beyond the technical and logistics aspects, I thanks to all the people involved in this extraordinary team who gave themselves with a great professionalism. When we look at this kind of work and we are not directly involved, we are not aware of the extremely hard demands that it requires ... Ines was consecutive to 10 hours posing. Beyond the photographer, there are other very important elements less exposed without which the end product would not be the same, I speak about the Tania’s work in makeup and Bruno who is my assistant and who makes my job much easier. I speak from Paula and Carla in backstage. They are key elements which were giving excellent ideas all the time. I must say that the original idea of the photoshoot was from Paula, I followed and I developed the initial concept. In most of the times I just turn it all and, of course, I click the button. The post-production took hard work but I enjoy very much to do it.
Não posso dizer muito. Para além dos aspectos técnicos, da logística, das pessoas envolvidas na equipa e que foram extraordinárias na entrega e no profissionalismo. Quando olhamos para uma produção deste género e não estamos directamente envolvidos, não temos noção das exigências… A Inês esteve 10 horas consecutivas a posar. Para além do fotógrafo, da modelo e da produção que acabam por estar mais expostos, há outros elementos muito importantes, sem os quais o produto final não seria o mesmo, falo da Tânia na maquilhagem e do Bruno que é o meu assistente e que torna o meu trabalho muito mais fácil. Falo da Paula e da Carla que deram assistência à produção. São elementos fundamentais que contribuem com ideias. Aliás a ideia original parte da Paula, e eu seguia-a e desenvolvi o conceito. Na grande parte das vezes eu apenas giro isto tudo e, claro, carrego no botão. A pós-produção também me deu muito trabalho e gozo.
What is the meaning of the title?/ Qual o significado do titulo que escolheu para o editorial?
Through the experience I have, I firmly believe that our soul dictates the way we want to follow. Not a soul in the religious sense, but the soul which is a combination of inner strength, personal values and wishes. I think most of the time we have no idea what we can do if we have a strong spirit.
Pela experiencia que tenho, acredito piamente que a nossa alma dita o caminho que queremos seguir. Não a alma em sentido religioso, mas a alma que representa uma conjugação de força interior, valores pessoais e vontade. Acho que na maioria das vezes não temos noção do que somos capazes de fazer se tivermos um espírito forte.
What's your camera set-up like?/ Que camera utilizou?
Canon EOS 1D MarkII N with Sigma 24-70 2.8 lens. The studio equipment was composed of three autonomous Bowens heads.

How can you define yourself as a photographer?/ Como se define como fotógrafo?
I don’t know. I’m a photographer!?

What other visual artists are you into?/ Com que outros artistas visuais se identifica?
In photography I have a strong influence of the French school: Jean Loup Sieff, Jean Francois Jonvelle and latest Bruno Bisang. I very much appreciate the work of Joao Carlos (Hasselblad Masters Award in 2010 if I remember correctly), Eleanor Hardick Gavin Bond, Tim Walker and Mark Lagrange. I’m always doing some research work, because there are new photographers with different views who are constantly emerging and they are possessed of a very inspiring work.
Na fotografia tenho uma forte influencia da escola Francesa: Jean Loup Sieff, Jean François Jonvelle e mais recente o Bruno Bisang. Aprecio muito o trabalho do João Carlos (prémio Hasselblad Masters em 2010 se não me engano), da Eleanor Hardick, do Gavin Bond, do Tim walker, do Mark Lagrange. Faço algum trabalho de pesquisa, pois há sempre fotógrafos novos com visões diferentes que vão aparecendo e que são possuidores de um trabalho muito inspirador.
What are you planning on doing in the future as a photographer?/ Quais são os seus planos futuros como fotógrafo?
I do not know ... in Portugal is very difficult. I hope to keep working with the Fashion Heroines and the New Optimism, but I need to try to arrive at model agencies, fashion schools, publishers ... I have a great desire to leave abroad, to do my work to reach other markets where my work will be more valued and it can grow. We must continue to grow, to do different things, that is where the future goes.
Não sei… em Portugal está muito difícil. Espero continuar a colaborar com o Fashion Heroines e com a New Optimism, mas preciso de tentar chegar às agências de modelos, às escolas de moda, às editoras… tenho muita vontade de sair do país, de fazer o meu trabalho chegar a outras praças onde seja valorizado e possa crescer. É preciso continuar a crescer, fazer coisas diferentes, é por aí que vai o futuro.

Filipe Oliveira Baptista is the new artistic director of Lacoste!
The Portuguese designer Filipe Oliveira Baptista is the new Artistic Director of Lacoste. The designer, who was born in the Azores but he lived in Lisbon until the 18 years old, replaced the French designer Christophe Lemaire, who held the post since 2000.
The Portuguese designer based in Paris is one of the most promising names in French haute couture, and his collections were sold in Paris, New York, Los Angeles and Tokyo.
It is with great joy that the Fashion Heroines get this news because we always fought strongly for the work of Portuguese designers have the deserved recognition in a large fashion circuit. Felipe Oliveira Baptista left Portugal for over 10 years, studied at Kingston University in England, and worked at MaxMara in Italy and to the reputable houses Christophe Lemaire and Cerruti in France. With this experience, he ventured into the art of haute couture. In 2002 he received from Karl Lagerfeld the prize of the International Festival of Hyères and the next year, has been awarded grants from the Association Nationale pour le Développement des Arts de la Mode (one of the most important prizes for young designers) and Louis Vuitton Moet Hennessy.
His first woman collection for Lacoste will be in stores in spring / summer 2012.

Phillies Sweep Padres, Woman Sexually Assaulted, and 2010 Emmy Winners Phillies Pull Off Sweep of Padres
3 days after suffering a four-game sweep at the hands of the woeful Houston Astros, the Phillies bounced back with a three-game sweep out in San Diego. Cole Hamels was money Sunday - pitching 8 shut out innings. Perhaps, they just needed to get the heck out of Philly for a few days. We have seen that before with the Fightins. They go through stretches at home where they're dreadful and go onto the road and look like a polar opposite team. They continue their western road swing tomorrow against the Dodgers.
Woman Sexually Assaulted in Center City
A woman was sexually assaulted in Center City at a Septa Station. Authorities are on the hunt for a hispanic man, who is 5'7" and 140 pounds.
2010 Emmy's on Sunday Night
The Emmy's were on NBC Sunday night and Jimmy Fallon was a big hit. This will be the quickest Emmy run-down you will ever see, but here is the brief scoop on the major awards. Jane Lynch won for best supporting actress in a comedy. Michael C. Hall did not win this year for Dexter. Glee and Modern Family took the lion's share of the awards. Edie Falco won for best actress in a drama. Al Pacino won best actor for his portrayal of Dr. Jack Kevorkian in the HBO movie "You do not Know Jack." Kyra Sedgwick won best actress in a drama series for The Closer.
Bryan Cranston won for best actor in a drama series for Breaking Bad. Steve Carrell did not win best actor in a comedy series; that award went to Jim Parsons for The Big Bang Theory. Modern Familly won for best comedy series beating out The Office and 30 Rock. John LIthgow won the best guest actor Emmy for his role of Arthur in Dexter, one of the most chilling characters you will ever see. Finally, Mad Men won for best drama series.
