Good Morning America

Spike Lee and David Downs on ‘Good Morning America’ (VIDEO)

Director Spike Lee stopped by Good Morning America on Thursday, May 13, with David Downs, the executive director for the World Cup Bid committee.

The Bid committee is responsible for raising enough money for the United States to be able to bid on the opportunity to host the World Cup in either 2018 or 2022. Down talked about the politics behind convincing FIFA that the United States can host a profitable and memorable soccer showdown.

If they can convince the committee to bring the World Cup to the U.S., it has the potential to boost the economy in a big way, which Downs expressed to Good Morning America and its live audience. The process for the bid kicked off in December 2008, and the committee expects to have an answer from FIFA by December 22, 2010.

Spike Lee, who is a member of the World Cup Bid committee, spoke intimately about his love of soccer and his expansive travels over the years to engage in the sport as a spectator.

The 2010 World Cup kicks off on June 11, in South Africa and will broadcast in the States on ABC, ESPN, ESPN-2 and ESPN 3D, as well as stream live on numerous sites across the Internet, including Live Soccer TV.
